N. Ind. sees RV boost ahead of Obama visit

ELKHART, Ind. - A recreational vehicle supplier on Tuesday announced plans to expand and add jobs at a second plant in the northern Indiana area that has seen thousands of layoffs with the collapse of the RV industry.

Dometic Corp.'s announcement came a day before President Barack Obama makes his second trip to hard-hit Elkhart County since he's taken office.

Executives of Dometic joined Gov. Mitch Daniels at the company's plant in Elkhart, where it last month got city tax breaks for an expansion to add about 240 jobs. The company also said it would shift production of retractable RV awnings from a fire-damaged plant in Mexico to its factory in nearby LaGrange, where it plans to hire about 115 workers.

Indiana Autoworkers Go Back To School

The roll call in classes at Ivy Tech Community College in Kokomo, Ind., is longer since the latest bout of economic troubles hit the U.S. auto industry.

With one in five people in Kokomo now jobless, the school's ranks are swelling with laid-off factory workers. Many of them are attending college with the help of Trade Adjustment Assistance, a federal program that pays for retraining of workers whose jobs have been hurt by foreign trade or competition.

Kokomo is just south of Elkhart, Ind., where President Obama is expected to visit Aug. 5 to discuss steps his administration is taking to revive the economy.

As green jobs appear, Indiana governor races Obama to Elkhart County

Elkhart County, Indiana, which President Obama has cast as a symbol of the economic devastation left behind by George W. Bush, is showing what might be the first stirrings of recovery–with a decidedly green hue. And both Obama and Indiana’s Republican governor, Mitch Daniels, are sprinting there this week.

'Cash for clunkers' winners -- foreign or domestic?

The reality is not so simple. True, every Focus sold in America is made at Ford’s Wayne, Mich., assembly plant. Of the Honda Civics sold here, 95% are built in Indiana or Ontario, Canada, and all of the engines are made in the U.S...
